BLACK HISTORY NOTES

Africatown, Alabama was founded by the last known people smuggled into the US as slaves. Wealthy Mobile businessman Timothy Meaher arranged for the Clotilda Ship to bring its ‘illegal cargo’ to Alabama from Ghana in 1860. Immediately following the unloading of slaves, smugglers burned the Clotilda Ship to hide their crimes. The remains of the Clotilda Ship continues to be a mystery.
